How does the reliability of Wikipedia compare with the reliability of traditionally accepted scholastic research sources?

I think a few guiding questions would be:

1. How reliable is Wikipedia as a source - are there any statistical studies to substantiate this?

2. What are some other acceptable scholastic research sources, and what are their reliability statistics like?

3. How do the two sets of reliability data stack up against each other?

and maybe a bigger question to be answered (not sure about this one yet...)

4. What is an acceptable reliability percentage? (This is a really loaded question depending on the topic and risk-related nature of the research. Researching how to make play-doh and how to do heart surgery would have different risk factors were the research results applied.)
Here are my research and focus questions.

My full name is Francisco Jaquez, but please call me Frank. I’m an Instructional Designer for Bank of America. I’m pursuing a B.S. in Instructional Design and Technology and will continue with Walden to obtain my Masters. I’ve enjoyed the program so far and have been able to incorporate what I’ve learned back into my workplace.

I have experience working with various software pieces; PowerPoint, Articulate, Camtasia, Lectora, Audacity, just to name a few.

I don’t have any problems working with teams remotely; this is how I work currently. My only concern is falling behind, or having someone else fall behind when it is time to be a leader. Please feel free to reach out to me if you need help during your work. We all seem to have jobs and busy personal lives and I’m willing to jump in to help our team succeed. Just ask! *smile*

I know we can make this project a success. My only other concern is being able to find credible sources for our research, but I know we can make this happen.

I’ve currently been traveling to different countries, but will return to the states on June 19. I’ll live in Texas, which is in central time. Please feel free to reach me via e-mail: francisco.jaquez@waldenu.edu or fjaquez@live.com.

I know I put much of this information in our previous emails, but I wanted to send my introduction per the Week 1 instructions. I have extensive graphic design experience for print (weak on the Web side); I can make my way through PowerPoint but because of my background have always tried to avoid it whenever possible. If needed, I have the complete Adobe Master Collection, including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Professional, etc. and so you all know, I despise writing ;-). As most of you shared in your emails, I don't have experience with podcasts (but I do have GarageBand on my Mac).

I liked Barb's idea regarding incorporating an existing podcast if necessary. The commoncraft example from our Week 1 resources exemplifies how simple it is that "anyone" can edit the information on a Wiki, thereby potentially rendering it unreliable. Just a thought...

I am in Central Time and available almost anytime day or evening, with the exception of about three hours every other Thursday and Sunday nights.

My initial thought was that I am thankful that we were not assigned the digital native/digital immigrant topic! My second thought was that it will be an interesting topic to research since it is so popular (who doesn't use it, especially since Google now searches it) and we need to understand what might make it a reliable reference in the future. Another thought is that since the topic is a collaborative wiki, if there is a way to make a wiki our final presentation instead of PowerPoint? I know we've all had the discussions about the "death by PowerPoint." Would it be considered multimedia if there were links to podcasts, videos, or .pdf files, etc.? The simplicity (yet informative format) of that commoncraft video intrigues me. Just thinking "out loud" here, let me know your thoughts!

I work full time, from 5:45am - 2:45 pm (or later - I am salaried) Pacific time M-F. I usually do my homework later at night, after I have spent time with my family. My schedule is pretty tight, as I have multiple commitments for church as well each week. If you need to call me for some reason, my cell is 818-340-3946. Don't be surprised if I dont pick up though. Please leave a message with your name and I will return your call asap.

On the topic of the reliability of Wikipedia, the collaborative online encyclopedia, as a source of information, I am interested to see what we find. I use it often for basic information, however, I have my doubts about its validity from a scholarly point of view as it can be updated without sources being validated, or accurate. I am interested to see if there are any studies comparing it's validity / accuracy to any other types of more scholarly work... I think it is a good basic starting point for research, but nothing I would want to quote for a scholarly work.
Hi everyone,
